Custom Golden Retriever Oil Painting in the UK: A Complete Guide to Commissioning Your Dog's Portrait

Golden retrievers are one of Britain's best-loved breeds. With that feathery golden coat, soft eyes and permanently hopeful expression, it's no wonder so many owners want to capture their dog in something more lasting than a phone photo. A hand-painted oil portrait of your golden retriever turns a beloved family member into a piece of art that can hang in your home for years to come.
This guide covers what to expect when commissioning a golden retriever oil painting in the UK, from choosing an artist to taking the perfect reference photo.

Why Choose an Oil Painting for Your Golden Retriever?
Plenty of options exist for pet portraits, including digital prints, watercolours and pencil sketches. Oil paint remains the favourite for golden retrievers, and for good reason.
It captures that golden coat. Oils blend slowly and build in translucent layers, which lets an artist reproduce the warm range of tones in a golden retriever's fur, from pale cream on the chest to deep amber along the ears and back.
It has depth and richness. Oil paint has a luminous quality that prints can't match. Light seems to sit inside the painting, which gives a portrait real presence on the wall.
It lasts. Properly painted and varnished, oil paintings can last for centuries. A portrait of your dog is a heirloom.
It's completely personal. Unlike a mass-produced print or AI generated image, a commissioned painting is made for you, reflecting your dog's markings, expression and personality.
What Does a Golden Retriever Oil Painting Cost in the UK?
Prices vary widely depending on the artist's experience, the size of the canvas and the level of detail. My prices for custom portraits can be found here. Always ask for a clear quote up front, and check what's included.
How Long Does a Commission of a Golden Retriever Take?
Oil paint takes time to dry, so a custom portrait is never an overnight job. Most UK artists quote anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks, depending on their waiting list and the complexity of the piece. If you need the painting for a specific date, such as a birthday, Christmas or a memorial, order early and tell the artist your deadline when you enquire. I try my best to accommodate people! I personally varnish oil paintings using Gamvar varnish, which only requires the painting to be touch dry before varnishing.

How to Take the Perfect Reference Photo of Your Golden Retriever for an Oil Painting
The photo you send is the foundation of the painting. A few simple tips make a big difference:
Use natural light. Shoot outdoors on a bright but overcast day, or near a large window. Avoid harsh flash, which flattens the coat and causes red-eye.
Get down to eye level. Photographing from your dog's height gives a more natural, engaging expression than shooting from above.
Focus on the eyes. Sharp, bright eyes are what bring a portrait to life.
Capture their personality. Is your golden a goofball, a gentle soul or a tennis-ball obsessive? Choose a photo that feels like them.
Send the highest resolution possible. Use the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo sent through a messaging app.

Delivery and Framing in the UK for your Golden Retriever Oil Painting
Most UK artists ship framed or unframed paintings via tracked, insured courier or Royal Mail. Ask whether your portrait will be delivered ready to hang, and whether the price includes packaging and postage. Personally, I post my portraits via Royal Mail Special Delivery guaranteed by 1pm. Portraits are also available to collect in person from me in Derbyshire, if you are local, or fancy a trip to the Peak District, I am located around 30 minutes south of Chatsworth. I provide framing at an additional cost of between £40-£50, for a sleek float frame in either black, white or wood tones.

Frequently Asked Questions about Golden Retriever Oil Paintings
How much does a golden retriever oil painting cost in the UK?Most commissions start from around £150 for a very small portrait and rise with size and complexity. Ask for a quote based on your chosen dimensions. My pet portrait price list can be found here.
Can I commission a portrait of a dog who has passed away?Yes. Many artists work from photos to create a memorial portrait. Share as many clear images as you can, and explain what you'd like to capture. Personally, I really try to be able to create something from the photos you have. This may involve using multiple photos etc.
What size should I choose? For a large feature, 12x16 inches or has impact. For a shelf or smaller space, 8x10 inches as a head and neck portrait works well.
Will the painting look exactly like my dog?A skilled artist will capture your dog's markings, coat colour and expression. Good communication and high-quality photos help get the likeness right. If I've got an excellent quality photo that you feel is accurate to how they look in real life, it is very hard to mess up!
How do I care for an oil painting?Hanging it out of direct sunlight is highly important to prevent fading by the sun, away from radiators and damp, and dust gently with a soft dry cloth.
